- Tightening the grip on Iran threatens Biden's quest to curb the price of gasoline.
There are only six months left until the US presidential elections, and President Joe Biden's strategy to reduce gasoline prices appears vulnerable to failure. The administration's leniency toward sanctions on Iranian, Russian, and Venezuelan oil has been a key factor in its effort to rein in fuel prices. But this leniency has become a greater risk politically, as Iran's attack on Israel has increased pressure on Biden to tighten crude oil exports from Iran. The calculations are becoming more complicated for Biden ahead of the elections, in which expectations indicate that voters’ decisions will witness a strong focus on the high cost of living. History has proven that there is a close connection between the fortunes of American presidents and the prices of gasoline at gas stations, even though their ability to control the oil market in the short term is limited. (Bloomberg)
