GE: Hormuz Slips Back Into Danger

Hormuz Slips Back Into Danger.
Last week’s recovery in Gulf energy flows proved fragile. At least 12 ships were attacked in the week to 5 October, the most since the war began, and strikes continued almost daily: a supertanker hit a mine on Saturday and another tanker was struck on Sunday. Crude transiting the strait fell to around 8.5m barrels a day, roughly 40% below normal. Talks remain deadlocked, and no breakthrough is expected before Israel votes on 27 October and America on 3 November.
Washington Turns to Moscow for Diesel.
With US diesel still above $6 a gallon and the midterms weeks away, Trump struck a deal with Putin for Russia to supply diesel to American and global markets: 300,000 tonnes immediately, with more to follow, enabled by a temporary US sanctions licence. Moscow partially lifted its own export ban the next day. Analysts doubt the volumes will move prices much, while Zelenskyy called it “a weak decision by strong partners”. The deal shows how far energy security now outranks sanctions policy, and the strain that puts on Western unity.
Bonds Hit a 24-Year High, Then Pause.
The US 10-year yield touched nearly 5.37% on Wednesday, its highest since 2002, before a solid Treasury auction eased fears about demand and pulled it back below 5.25%. Minutes of the Fed’s September meeting showed all 19 officials backed the hike to 3.75–4.00%, and most see another increase as likely by year-end. This week’s inflation data, expected to show headline CPI rising towards 3.7%, will test whether the bond market’s pause can last.
France’s Budget Faces Its Moment of Truth.
France now pays more to borrow than Italy or Greece. Its 10-year yield has approached 5%, the highest since 2002, and the spread over Germany reached 152 basis points, the widest since the eurozone crisis of 2011–12. On Tuesday the National Assembly begins debating Prime Minister Lecornu’s 2027 budget, which seeks about €54bn in savings and extra revenue to cut the deficit from 5.4% to 5% of GDP. His minority government could fall in the attempt. The question is whether Paris can pass a budget at all.
Starlink Moves Onto the Telecoms’ Turf.
SpaceX agreed to buy a nationwide portfolio of low-band spectrum, the airwaves that carry mobile signals indoors, and America’s big carriers took the hit. T-Mobile fell 13%, AT&T nearly 10% and Verizon almost 9% on Friday, while European telecom stocks also slid and tower operators rallied. SpaceX does not plan to launch its phone service until late 2027, and still needs ground infrastructure, but investors are already pricing a new competitor.
