- Egypt lifted the price of the customs dollar by 10% to 18.65 EGP, starting in June, according to a statement by the Egyptian Customs Authority.
We believe this decision will affect inflation directly noting that there is pressure on the currency. The customs dollar is what the importer pays in local currency, equivalent to the dollar fees imposed on him in return for releasing the imported goods and held in customs. Although Egypt raised the customs dollar price to 17 EGP in May, it has been fixing it since the end of last March at 16 EGP for basic commodities and production requirement. Inflation figures in Egyptian cities jumped strongly, affected by the continued flurry of global food prices, to record 13.1% in April on an annual basis, compared to 10.5% in March, which is the highest level of numbers since the first half of 2019. (Bloomberg Asharq)
