MACRO
- Qatar’s Budget records small deficit in 1Q25.
Qatar recorded a budget deficit of QAR0.5bn (USD133mn) in 1Q25, which was covered through debt instruments, the Finance Ministry said on Tuesday. Total revenue in the quarter stood at QAR49.4bn, down 7.5% Y-o-Y, thanks to a 10% Y-o-Y decline in hydrocarbon revenues, which nearly matched a 9% Y-o-Y decline in oil prices. The drop in hydrocarbon revenues outweighed 13% Y-o-Y growth in non-oil revenues (which represented only 14% of total revenues). Meanwhile, expenditure was down 3% Y-o-Y to QAR49.9bn, driven by a sustained decline in capex spending, which dropped 11% Y-o-Y (sustaining a declining trend for the fifth consecutive quarter. - Resilient non-oil sectors to keep Qatar’s economy afloat in 2025.
Qatar’s economy is expected to remain on stable footing in 2025, buoyed by steady growth in non-hydrocarbon sectors and a slight recovery in hydrocarbon output, according to a recent analysis by Fitch Solutions. While global economic uncertainty and softening energy prices have led to a downward revision in the country’s growth forecast from 2.9 % to 2.6 %, Fitch reports that Qatar’s diversified growth drivers and long-term energy export contracts will shield it from more severe global shocks. Fitch revised Qatar’s real GDP growth forecast for 2025 down to 2.6 %, citing lower global energy prices and increased investor caution amid elevated international uncertainty. The updated figure is a slight reduction from the previously expected 2.9 % but still represents a modest improvement over 2024’s estimated 2.4 % growth. (Reuters)
- Kuwait Non-oil sector maintains solid expansion.
Kuwait’s private non-oil activity remained in expansionary mode in May, with the PMI registering a reading of 53.9, down slightly from 54.2 in Apr. Firms reported strong growth in both output and new orders, extending a streak of expansion to 28 consecutive months. Respondents attributed the uptick to competitive pricing strategies and enhanced marketing efforts. Employment rose for the third consecutive month, and the rate of job creation was the joint-fastest recorded since the PMI series began in 2018; however, staffing growth remained modest overall and did not fully alleviate rising backlogs of work. Purchasing activity also increased for the second month running, and firms reported a solid build-up in input inventories. (S&P)

Egypt’s annual headline inflation rate accelerated in May to 16.5 % 2025, compared to a rate of 13.5 % in April 2025, CAPMAS also announced the acceleration of the country’s monthly headline inflation rate in May, rising by 1.8 % to 258.4 points. According to the agency, rising prices across several consumer groups were the main drivers of the inflation increase. These included grains and bread, which slightly increased by 0.1 %, while meat and poultry prices rose by 1.2 %. Fish and seafood prices climbed by 2.4 %, and oils and fats increased by 0.2 %. Moreover, fruit prices surged significantly by 13.4 %, while vegetables went up by 2.1 %.
