OPEC+ set to go ahead with December oil output hike

OPEC+ set to go ahead with December oil output hike

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies will go ahead with a planned oil production increase in December but first need to cut output to address overproduction by some members, two OPEC+ sources announced that the plan didn't represent any major change from existing policy after the Financial Times reported Saudi Arabia is committed to OPEC+ raising production on Dec. 1 and dropping its unofficial USD 100 a barrel oil price target to win back market share. OPEC and Saudi Arabia have repeatedly said they do not target a certain price and make decisions based on market fundamentals and in the interest of balancing supply and demand. The output increase in December is not about regaining market share, it is about a small number of countries phasing out their voluntary output cut.

Saudi Arabia ready to abandon USD 100 crude target to take back market share

Saudi Arabia is ready to abandon its unofficial price target of USD 100 a barrel for crude as it prepares to increase output, in a sign that the kingdom is resigned to a period of lower oil prices, according to people familiar with the country’s thinking. The world’s largest oil exporter and seven other members of the Opec+ producer group had been due to unwind long-standing production cuts from the start of October. But a two-month delay sparked speculation over whether the group would ever be able to raise output, with the price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, briefly dropping below USD 70 this month to its lowest since December 2021. However, officials in the kingdom are committed to bringing back that production as planned on December 1, even if it leads to a prolonged period of lower prices.
