MACRO
- A 100-basis-point interest rate cut is expected in Egypt at the year-end meeting.
The Central Bank of Egypt is expected to cut interest rates by between 50 and 100 basis points at its final meeting of 2025 . This expectation is driven by an improvement in November inflation readings, the appreciation of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar, and the US Federal Reserve’s decision to cut interest rates at its most recent meeting. The overnight deposit and lending rates, as well as the central bank’s main operation rate, currently stand at 21%, 22%, and 21.5%, respectively, following a cumulative 625-basis-point reduction since the beginning of the year. This marks the first easing cycle in four and a half years. The central bank cut interest rates from their record highs for the first time in four and a half years, delivering total reductions of 625 basis points across four moves: 225 basis points in April, 100 basis points in May, 200 basis points in August, and 100 basis points in October. Egypt and Qatar are currently exploring the signing of a free trade agreement aimed at boosting bilateral trade, expanding investment opportunities, and strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries, according to Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed. Speaking on the sidelines of the Egyptian Qatari Business Forum held in Cairo on Sunday, the minister said that trade volume between Doha and Cairo reached USD 221 mn last year, marking a year-on-year increase of 54%. He added that the Egyptian market facilitates Qatari companies’ access to several European and African markets, supported by the free trade agreements that Egypt has in place with those countries. For his part, Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Hassan El-Khatib, said that bilateral trade has gained positive momentum, rising from around USD 80 mn in 2023 to USD 143 mn during the first ten months of 2025, representing growth of nearly 80%. - Saudi Arabia’s economy posts its strongest quarterly growth of the year in the third quarter.
Saudi Arabia’s economy recorded its fastest growth pace since the start of the year in the third quarter, with real GDP expanding by 4.8%, according to data from the General Authority for Statistics. (Bloomberg Asharq)
- Ratings upgrade spark optimism in Oman’s debt market, but challenges remain.
Sentiment around Oman’s credit story remains upbeat since Fitch’s recent upgrade of the country to investment grade, which followed earlier upgrades by Moody’s and S&P Global Ratings. To investors, Oman offers an attractive credit profile with spreads remaining tight relative to its peers. The sultanate’s fiscal discipline and economic diversification have driven strong investor demand, which has pushed bond prices higher. For instance, five-year Omani sovereign bonds trade only about 25 basis points wider than Saudi bonds, despite Oman having a five- to six-notch ratings differential. (Zawya)

The Swiss government has proposed that UBS, Switzerland's sole remaining global bank since it acquired Credit Suisse in 2023, should capitalise its foreign subsidiaries by 100% rather than 60% at present, to cover potential losses abroad. That requirement forms the core of reforms that the bank says would mean finding an additional USD 24 bn in capital. The government has proposed UBS use Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital to meet those requirements. (Reuters)
- Six IPOs cancelled and liquidity falls to a two-year low on Saudi Arabia’s Nomu market.
Saudi Arabia’s parallel market, Nomu, is facing a real test in 2025 amid slowing liquidity and a rising number of cancelled initial public offerings, raising questions about its ability to fulfill its role as a financing platform for small and medium-sized enterprises. The latest cancellation came from Ideal Weight Company after its IPO failed to achieve full subscription, adding to five other companies that have withdrawn their offerings this year. These include Zahrat Al-Khuzama Aluminum, Rawabi Marketing, Dome International, and Al-Khalidi Supplies, all due to weak demand, while International Federations cancelled its offering at the company’s request. This year’s number of cancelled IPOs is the highest since the market’s launch, with 12 cancellations recorded so far, compared with just one in 2024 . This has coincided with a sharp decline in liquidity, as trading values fell in November to around SAR 510.4 mn, the lowest monthly level since November 2023, despite the increase in the number of listed companies to 126 . Indian state-run and private refiners continued to receive Russian crude after the 21 November US sanctions cutoff as a new slate of Gulf-based intermediaries stepped in to supply barrels at a reduced price.
