Hormuz Reopens, But the Real Test Begins.
After weeks of escalating tensions, the U.S. and Iran signed a 60-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that extends the ceasefire and sets the stage for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement also aims to remove naval blockades and restore global shipping through one of the world's most critical energy corridors. However, the deal remains a temporary framework rather than a final settlement, with difficult negotiations—particularly over Iran's nuclear program—still ahead.
Oil Prices Retreat as Supply Fears Ease.
Global oil prices fell sharply after the breakthrough between Washington and Tehran reduced concerns over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude slipped below $80 per barrel as expectations grew that Gulf energy exports would normalize and shipping activity would gradually recover. At the same time, forecasts of a potential oversupply in the global oil market added further downward pressure on prices.
The Fed Keeps Markets on Edge.
The U.S. Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged but delivered a more hawkish message than investors expected, signaling that rates could remain elevated for longer. The announcement boosted the U.S. dollar and pushed Treasury yields to multi-year highs, as markets reassessed the timing of future rate cuts and adjusted expectations for tighter financial conditions.
Gold Gives Up Safe-Haven Gains.
With geopolitical tensions easing and investors becoming less defensive, demand for traditional safe-haven assets weakened. Gold prices fell by more than 2%, while silver also extended its losses, pressured by the stronger U.S. dollar and the prospect of higher interest rates for an extended period. The move reflects a shift in investor sentiment from protection toward risk-taking.
Central Banks Signal Higher-for-Longer Rates.
The global fight against inflation is far from over. The Bank of Japan raised interest rates to their highest level in decades, while the Bank of England maintained its current policy stance but continued to emphasize inflation risks. Together with the Federal Reserve's latest message, these decisions reinforce the view that the era of high interest rates may persist longer than markets had previously anticipated.
