America Votes, and Iran Waits

Americans vote in the midterms today, and Trump has suggested military action against Iran could follow. Diplomacy is still alive: Tehran has shortened its timetable for partly reopening Hormuz from seven days to two, and described a letter from Vice President JD Vance as a positive “change in tone”. But its conditions remain steep, including an end to the naval blockade and sanctions relief, and at least four tankers were reportedly hit over the weekend. Tomorrow’s headlines may matter as much for oil as for Congress.

A Split Fed Keeps December in Play

A Split Fed Keeps December in Play
The Federal Reserve kept rates at 3.75–4.00% on Wednesday, but two officials dissented in favour of a hike. The data backed their caution: the US economy grew at a 3.4% annualised rate in the third quarter, while PCE inflation rose to 3.6% in September, with core at 3.1%. Households are feeling the squeeze, as real disposable income fell 0.3%. Growth is strong, inflation is sticky and oil is rising, a combination that keeps a December hike firmly on the table.
Lagarde’s Early Exit Unsettles the ECB

Lagarde’s Early Exit Unsettles the ECB

The European Central Bank held its deposit rate at 2.5%, pausing after two hikes in five months, but the decision was overshadowed by Christine Lagarde’s announcement that she will step down in February, nine months early. Isabel Schnabel leaves in January for the IMF, and chief economist Philip Lane’s term ends in May. The leadership change comes as energy pushes euro-area inflation towards 4%, twice the target, and French bond turmoil threatens growth. Europe faces an inflation fight with a central bank in transition.

Israel’s Election Ends in Deadlock

Israel’s Election Ends in Deadlock
Israel’s vote produced no majority. With the count almost complete, Binyamin Netanyahu’s bloc won 53 of the Knesset’s 120 seats, the opposition led by Gadi Eisenkot 48, and Arab-led parties 19. Neither side has an obvious route to 61: the opposition cannot govern without Arab support, which Eisenkot has ruled out. Likud has pushed unsubstantiated claims that the election was “stolen”, which the opposition says are an attempt to delegitimise the result. Weeks of bargaining, or even another election, now lie ahead.
Big Tech’s Cash Burn Comes Into Focus

Big Tech’s Cash Burn Comes Into Focus

Alphabet’s revenue rose 25% and its cloud business more than doubled, yet its shares fell almost 13% on Thursday, their worst day on record, wiping out about $500bn in value, after free cash flow turned negative and it signalled much higher spending in 2027. Amazon missed forecasts and plans about $220bn of capital spending this year. The Nasdaq fell nearly 3% on Friday. After Meta last week, the pattern is clear: markets now judge AI leaders on cash, not just growth.
