IEA Trims Forecast of Record Oil Oversupply for First Time Since May
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has lowered its projections for global oil oversupply for this year and next, responding to stronger demand and slower growth in production. The IEA now expects world oil supply to outpace demand by 3.815 million barrels per day in 2026—still a record high, but 231,000 barrels less than last month’s forecast. This marks the first downward adjustment since OPEC+ started raising production in May, as well as the first time this year's predicted surplus has been scaled back since February. Several factors influenced this outlook: OPEC+ has halted further supply increases, estimates for non-OPEC+ output have changed, and global oil consumption expectations have improved. The IEA report highlighted that the expected surplus for late 2025 has narrowed, citing a sudden pause after months of rising global oil supply. A better economic and trade climate is also boosting demand. Despite these changes, fears of too much oil on the market have pushed prices downward, especially after OPEC+ increased production earlier this year. Brent crude futures dropped below $62 per barrel on Thursday, down 17% so far this year. Even though the IEA's revision means a smaller surplus, next year’s projection is still very high—second only to what was seen during the major demand drop of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. The agency also warned that real supply might turn out lower than their current estimate if producers cut back output in response to market conditions.
Fed Lowers Rates Amid Three Dissents, Expects One Cut in 2026
The Federal Reserve delivered its third consecutive interest-rate cut, lowering the benchmark federal funds rate by a quarter point to 3.5%-3.75%. The decision, with three dissenting votes, highlighted growing divisions within the Federal Open Market Committee over whether persistent inflation or labor market weakness poses a greater risk to the U.S. economy. Chair Jerome Powell signaled caution about future moves, emphasizing that another rate cut is not guaranteed, and the committee’s statement reflected increased uncertainty about the timing of additional adjustments. While investors scaled back expectations for rate cuts next year, the S&P 500 closed higher and Treasury yields declined slightly on the news. The Fed’s new economic forecasts project only one rate cut in 2026 and one in 2027, with policymakers split between holding rates steady and supporting more reductions. Officials upgraded their growth outlook for 2026 and expect inflation to decline next year, assuming no major new tariffs are imposed. The meeting also marked the first time since 2019 that three officials dissented, reflecting a range of opinions on the appropriate policy path. The Fed authorized fresh short-term Treasury purchases to maintain bank reserve levels and support market liquidity, as economic uncertainty persists amid a government shutdown and political pressures surrounding the central bank’s leadership.
Iran raises gasoline prices for the first time since deadly 2019 protests.
Iran has implemented a new three-tiered pricing system for its heavily subsidized gasoline, the first significant change since a 2019 price hike that triggered widespread protests and a deadly crackdown. Despite some adjustments, the government remains cautious, likely seeking to avoid further unrest among a public already strained by a weakening rial and international sanctions. The new structure preserves the lowest subsidized rate for the first 60 liters per month, with moderate increases for higher consumption, though even the highest price remains among the lowest globally. On the day of the change, the response at gas stations was calm, with little sign of public agitation. The ongoing subsidies represent a significant financial burden for Iran, with the International Energy Agency reporting that the country paid $52 billion in oil subsidies in 2022, second only to Russia. Economists argue that the longstanding policy of cheap fuel has failed to address Iran's budget deficit and has instead contributed to persistent inflation and economic challenges. Despite gradual price increases since 2009, the government’s attempts to reform the system have not resolved underlying fiscal problems, leaving the economy caught in a cycle of inflation and budget shortfalls.
Abu Dhabi’s Hedge Fund Island Plans USD 16 Bn Expansion
Abu Dhabi's emergence as a global financial hub has accelerated with a surge of hedge fund firms establishing operations in the city, drawn by its sovereign wealth, favorable regulations, and strategic location. Major players like Man Group plan to enter the market, while others such as Dmitry Balyasny’s firm and Brevan Howard Asset Management have expanded their presence and investments. Notably, Brevan Howard now manages more capital in Abu Dhabi than anywhere else, reflecting confidence in the city’s pro-business environment, UK-based legal framework, and advantageous time zone for global trading. The firm’s workforce in the emirate has grown tenfold since 2023, underscoring Abu Dhabi’s growing status alongside New York and London as a major financial center.
