Emerging market debt issuance hits record as borrowing costs fall

Governments and companies in emerging markets have sold a record 50 billion USD in debt in the first days of 2024 as they rush to lock in a recent sharp drop in borrowing costs. A 12 billion USD issuance by Saudi Arabia this week helped bring bond sales by developing economies including Mexico and Indonesia to 51 billion USD this year, compared with 42 billion USD in the same period last year. Governments sold 29 billion USD of this year’s total. Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, has already funded about half of its projected fiscal deficit this year, underlining how uncertainty over the path of US rates is pushing countries to front-load their borrowing as much as possible. Despite a fall in yields, the sale still drew 30 billion USD of demand, indicating healthy investor appetite. After years in which rising rates in advanced economies enticed them away from emerging markets, investors are once again looking at bonds issued by developing countries, both in dollars and in local currencies, as an attractive alternative to the lower yields now on offer from developed market debt. Local currency bonds could outperform if emerging market central banks can cut rates this year, while external debts would be boosted by a weakening dollar.

Argentina’s annual inflation tops 200% as Javier Milei confronts crisis

Argentina’s annual inflation tops 200% as Javier Milei confronts crisis
Argentina’s annual inflation rate reached 211.4% in December, the country’s statistics agency said on Thursday, confirming the depth of the economic crisis facing the country and its new libertarian President Javier Milei. On a monthly basis, prices rose on average 25.5% in December, compared with a 12.8% increase in November. The rate is the worst since 1991, when Argentina was exiting a period of hyperinflation. Argentina’s chronic high inflation stems largely from previous governments’ reliance on money printing to finance spending — a practice Milei railed against on the campaign trail. But price pressures intensified in December as Milei devalued the peso’s artificially high official exchange rate by 54% and allowed price-fixing agreements to lapse. Both moves affected food prices in particular. December’s monthly rate would likely be close to the peak of Argentina’s current inflation crisis, with a burgeoning recession likely to slow further rises. The IMF projects that Argentina’s economy will shrink by 2.5% in 2024.
US CPI inflation outstripped forecasts!

US CPI inflation outstripped forecasts!

US inflation outstripped forecasts in December, hitting 3.4% on an annual basis and dimming market expectations that interest rates would fall as soon as March. The expectations were around a rise of 3.2%, up from 3.1% in November. The core rate also came in higher than what was predicted, in an apparent vindication of the US Federal Reserve’s caution over cutting rates from their 23-year-high. US stocks fell following the data showing a headline 3.4% annual rise in consumer prices. The blue-chip S&P 500 and the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite both declined 0.4% in New York. Trading in the bond market was choppy. The two-year Treasury yield, which moves with rate expectations, rose immediately following the publication of the data, but later reversed that move, leaving the yield at 4.33%, roughly where it was when the data was released. In the futures market, traders slightly reduced expectations that the Fed would cut rates in March. Rate setters have said that they want to be confident that inflation was moving towards their 2% goal before dialling back on high interest rates. You’re not supposed to react to one data point. But in this case, the Fed is looking for a signal to start. And, with this CPI report, the starting gun didn’t go off. After this, the Fed can’t use their meeting at the end of January to hint that they want to act in March. It’s going to take another round.

The housing crisis is getting more media attention!

The housing crisis is getting more media attention!
One of the most powerful cultural myths of the English-speaking world over the past century has been the belief that if you work hard, you’ll earn enough to buy yourself a house and start a family. For a long time, it held true. Between the end of the first world war and the turn of the millennium, rates of home ownership climbed rapidly in both Britain and the US, topping out at about 70 % as young adults flew the parental nest and set up homes of their own. But in recent decades, that trend has not only stalled but reversed. In 1980, almost half of 18 to 34-year-olds in Britain and America lived in their own property with children of their own, making this the most common arrangement for young adults. Today that is true of only about one in five, and the most common set-up for 18 to 34-year-olds is now to be living with their parents. Average house prices were roughly four times average earnings in the UK for 80 years between the 1910s and 1990s. This was a fixed characteristic of British society. Knuckle down, save for a few years and buy in your late twenties: simple. Then the ratio doubled in the space of a decade. The last time it was that high, cars had not yet been invented, Queen Victoria was on the throne and home ownership was the preserve of a wealthy minority. To put the price-to-earnings ratio into more tangible terms, it now takes 13 years to save a deposit for the average UK property (up from three in the mid-1990s), and 30 years in London (up from four). To state the obvious, nobody spends 30 years saving for a house. The dream is over.
An influx of Chinese cars is terrifying the West

An influx of Chinese cars is terrifying the West

About 1 million American manufacturing workers lost their jobs to Chinese competition in 1997-2011, as the country integrated into the global trading system and began shipping cheap goods overseas. This “China shock” has since been blamed for everything from rising deaths among working-class Americans to the election of Donald Trump. The rejection of liberal attitudes to trade also explains why politicians embrace industrial policy today. Now China’s carmakers are enjoying an astonishing rise. That stokes fears of another ruinous shock. In fact, the successes of Chinese cars should be celebrated, not feared. Just five years ago China shipped only a quarter as many cars as Japan, then the world’s biggest exporter. This week the Chinese industry claimed to have exported over 5 million cars in 2023, exceeding the Japanese total. China’s biggest carmaker, byd, sold 0.5 million electric vehicles (evs) in the fourth quarter, leaving Tesla in the dust. Chinese evs are so snazzy, whizzy and—most important—cheap that the constraint on their export today is the scarcity of vessels for shipping them. As the world decarbonises, demand will rise further. By 2030 China could double its share of the global market, to a third, ending the dominance of the West’s national champions, especially in Europe.
