China threatens Japan with economic retaliation over new chip restrictions

China threatens Japan with economic retaliation over new chip restrictions
China has warned of harsh economic backlash if Japan tightens its rules on selling and servicing chipmaking equipment to Chinese companies, complicating US-led efforts to limit China’s access to advanced tech. Toyota Motor Corp., a key player in Japan's economy, has privately expressed concerns that Beijing might cut off Japan’s access to critical minerals needed for car production if stricter semiconductor controls are imposed.
Toyota's involvement in Japan’s chip strategy is evident, with investments in a new chip facility by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in Kumamoto. This highlights why its concerns carry weight for Japanese policymakers, alongside those of Tokyo Electron Ltd., a major semiconductor equipment maker that would be hit hardest by new export restrictions.
The US has been pushing Japan to impose tougher measures on companies like Tokyo Electron, aiming to stifle China’s semiconductor development. In response, senior US and Japanese officials are reportedly working together to secure a stable supply of critical minerals, especially after China’s recent restrictions on gallium, germanium, and graphite exports.
Will Turkey’s inflation rate continue falling?
Turkey’s inflation rate is forecast to have fallen sharply in August, bolstering policymakers’ confidence that a broad economic reform programme is slowing runaway price growth. Consumer prices are expected to have risen at an annual pace of 53% in August from 62% the previous month. Price growth is also expected to have cooled significantly on a month-on-month basis after accelerating to 3.2% in July as electricity price rises filtered through Turkey’s USD 1 tn economy.
Turkey has sharply tightened monetary policy as part of an effort to restore rational economic policymaking, which began after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was re-elected in May 2023. The central bank has increased its main interest rate from 8.5% in June 2023 to 50% in an attempt to cool overheating consumer demand, which had led to severe economic imbalances, including a swelling current account deficit.
The new measures, which have also included tax rises, have shown early signs of success, narrowing the current account deficit and rebuilding central bank reserves that had been severely depleted by the previous unorthodox economic policies. Still, economic officials privately concede that much of the fall in inflation, which registered 75% as recently as May, has been the result of last year’s very high baseline in prices. The true test will come in the coming months, when investors will get a clearer picture of whether the policies are working. Turkish market participants expect inflation to fall to 43% by year-end, according to a central bank survey. However, consumer expectations remain unanchored, with a separate poll by Istanbul’s Koç University showing households expect inflation of 96% at the end of 2024.
Nvidia's value drops nearly USD 200 bn after earnings report
Nvidia shares plunged over 6% on Thursday, wiping out almost USD 200 bn in market value, as the chipmaker’s latest earnings report fell short of Wall Street’s high expectations. This drop comes even though Nvidia’s revenue more than doubled in the last quarter. Despite the decline, Nvidia's stock is still up about 140% since the start of 2024.
In its recent results, Nvidia projected USD 32.5 bn in third-quarter revenue, slightly above analyst expectations but not enough to impress investors who have grown accustomed to the company significantly outperforming forecasts since the launch of ChatGPT. For the quarter ending July 28, Nvidia reported USD 30 bn in revenue, a 122% increase from last year, surpassing analysts’ predictions of USD 28.7 bn.
Nvidia assured investors that it expects "several billion dollars" in revenue from its next-gen AI chips this fiscal year, even with some production challenges. As a major indicator for the tech sector, Nvidia's earnings are now as closely watched as Federal Reserve policy moves.
Will US jobs data lead to a bigger Fed rate cut?
The monthly US jobs report is always a hot topic, but this Friday’s release has even more eyes on it. Investors believe it could determine how much the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this month. A Reuters poll predicts 163,000 new jobs were added in August, though estimates vary widely. Last month, Fed Chair Jay Powell signaled concerns about a weaker job market at the annual symposium in Wyoming but noted that the timing and size of rate cuts would depend on future data.
Investors are still debating whether the Fed will go for a quarter-point or a half-point rate cut at its mid-September meeting. Futures markets currently favor a quarter-point cut but suggest there’s a 30% chance of a deeper cut, according to CME’s FedWatch tool. This Friday’s job numbers carry extra weight after July’s report fell short, with only 114,000 jobs added versus the expected 175,000, sparking a global market sell-off. Another weak jobs report could raise fears of a sharper economic slowdown and increase the chances of a half-point rate cut later this month.
