Trump Says Prefers Strong Dollar But ‘You Can’t Sell Anything’

Trump Says Prefers Strong Dollar But ‘You Can’t Sell Anything’.
President Donald Trump said he would never back a weak dollar while also touting the economic benefits a low currency would bring, particularly for the country’s manufacturing sector, sending mixed signals Friday on US policy. “I will never say I like a low currency,” Trump told reporters in response to questions about the dollar, adding “I’m the person that likes a strong dollar, but a weak dollar makes you a hell of a lot more money ”. Trump’s comments come as foreign-exchange traders speculate that his administration is actively seeking a weaker dollar. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index is down 7.9% since Jan. 20 and about 8.5% so far in 2025.. That drop has served as a barometer of global investors’ unease with the administration’s economic agenda, in particular the higher tariffs Trump is levying on trading partners. Trump initially unveiled higher tariffs in April but paused those for 90 days in the wake of market turmoil, giving countries time to conduct negotiations. That timeframe, though, saw few deals and Trump has again extended the deadline for talks to Aug. 1 and has been sending trading partners letters setting out the tariff rates that will kick in on that date.
EU faces backlash from France and Germany over US trade deal
The EU-US trade deal prompted a backlash in Europe on Monday, with France’s Prime Minister François Bayrou saying that the bloc had “resigned itself into submission”. The criticism from Bayrou came as far-right leaders in France and Germany also rounded on the agreement, which leaves most EU exports to the US facing a 15 per cent tariff, claiming that it exposed the weakness of the bloc. Alice Weidel, co-leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany, posted on social media platform X that the deal was “not an agreement, but a slap in the face to European consumers and producers!” Germany’s biggest industry body, the Federation of German Industries, warned that the agreement was “an inadequate compromise” that would damage the country’s “export-oriented industry”. The pushback came even as the deal sent stocks higher, with investors saying it reduced the uncertainty over global trade that has stalked markets since US President Donald Trump announced his ‘liberation day’ tariffs in early April. The broad Stoxx Europe 600 was up 0.6% . Trump had threatened to impose 30 per cent tariffs on the EU if no deal had been struck by August 1. “[The] deal creates certainty in uncertain times. for citizens and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday. As part of the agreement announced by von der Leyen and Trump on Sunday, the EU also agreed to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on US energy products and weapons.
Samsung to supply Tesla with AI chips in USD 16.5 bn deal
Samsung Electronics has won a USD 16.5 bn order to produce Tesla’s next generation of custom artificial intelligence chips, raising hopes of a turnaround in the South Korean tech giant’s struggling contract chipmaking business. The eight-year contract, announced by Samsung in a regulatory filing and confirmed by Tesla chief executive Elon Musk on Monday, is the biggest deal that Samsung’s chip business has won from a single customer. Its value is equivalent to 7.6% of the company’s 2024 revenue. Samsung shares rose 6 per cent on the news. Musk wrote on his social media platform X that Samsung would produce Tesla’s next-generation AI6 chip at its new manufacturing facility in Texas, part of a USD 40 bn investment made by the South Korean company with assistance from subsidies under former US president Joe Biden’s Chips and Science Act. The custom chip will be used to power Tesla’s autonomous driving and humanoid robot technologies. Musk noted during a second-quarter earnings call last week that he hoped the AI6 chip could also be used in data centres to power Tesla’s video-based AI model training programmes. That would allow Tesla to reduce its reliance on general-purpose graphics processing units produced by companies such as Nvidia and AMD.
Qatar Bids for 2036 Olympics in Potential First for Mideast.
Qatar confirmed it will bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics, trying to become the first Middle Eastern nation to host one of the world’s biggest sporting events. The field for the Olympic and Paralympic Games is likely to be competitive, with Istanbul, the Indian city of Ahmedabad, Nusantara in Indonesia and Chile’s capital of Santiago all bidding too. Qatar, one of the world’s richest nations thanks to its abundance of natural gas, said it’s well positioned to hold the roughly two-week event in its capital, Doha, with 95% of the required sports infrastructure already in place. It may also be helped by hosting the 2022 men’s football World Cup, which was widely seen as a success, with fans and journalists largely praising the organization of the tournament. The move “reflects a national vision that sees sport as a driver of development and a platform for promoting mutual understanding and peace among nations,” said Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the Qatar Olympic Committee. Qatar spent around USD 300 bn on stadiums, hotels, roads and a new metro in Doha in the run up to the World Cup. The city will hold the 2030 Asian Games and can use some infrastructure from that for the 2036 Olympics, the Qatar Olympic Committee said.

A Saudi-Syrian investment forum in Damascus will include the signing of 44 pacts worth about USD 6 bn, said Syria’s Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa, as the war-ravaged country tries to revitalize its devastated economy through cooperation with the Gulf kingdom. A 150-person Saudi delegation consisting of businessmen and government officials arrived in Syria on Wednesday to complete the agreements, most of which are expected to be memorandums of understanding and joint projects, according to Saudi media. Agreements will be signed with the public and private sectors and span multiple areas including banking, construction, energy, civil aviation, telecommunication and cyber security, al-Mustafa said in a press conference.
