GE: Oil Hits a Six-Month High on War Fears

Oil Hits a Six-Month High on War Fears
Brent settled at $116.72 on Friday, its highest in six months, as markets braced for renewed US-Iran fighting after America’s 3 November midterms. Washington is sending a third carrier strike group and more Marines to the region, and Trump has said there is “a possibility” he will strike Iran. Flows through Hormuz remain about 26% below pre-war levels, while Houthi missiles aimed at Riyadh and southern Saudi Arabia keep the risk premium high. Markets are no longer pricing just a supply shortfall, but the odds of a second war.
Israel Votes in Its Most Consequential Election in Years
Israelis go to the polls on Tuesday in the first national vote since the attacks of 7 October 2023. Polls give the opposition bloc about 52 of the Knesset’s 120 seats and Binyamin Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist alliance about 50, both short of the 61 needed to govern. Palestinian-led parties, projected at around 13 seats, could tip the balance, and another deadlock leading to a repeat election cannot be ruled out. The outcome will shape Israel’s approach to Iran and Gaza, and its strained relations with Europe.
Meta Shows the Cost of the AI Race
Meta beat forecasts with revenue up 26% to $64.6bn, yet its shares fell about 7% after it raised the floor of its capex guidance to $135–145bn and reported negative free cash flow of $2.1bn for the quarter. Elsewhere, SK Hynix halted plans for a US listing of Solidigm, and Morgan Stanley cut its CoreWeave price target on financing doubts. Investors no longer reward AI spending by default: the question now is who can afford it.
A Super Week for Central Banks and Big Tech
This week packs the year’s busiest calendar into four days. The Fed meets on Wednesday and is expected to hold rates at 3.75–4.00%, though markets still price roughly an 80% chance of a hike in December; the ECB decides on Thursday. Alphabet and Microsoft report on Wednesday and Amazon on Thursday, alongside US GDP and PCE inflation data. American consumers now expect 4.7% inflation over the next year. With oil climbing again, the central question is whether the energy shock is fading or becoming entrenched.
A Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough Meets a Tough Market
Merck and Moderna’s personalised mRNA vaccine, given with Keytruda, cut the risk of melanoma returning or death by 42% in a phase 3 trial, compared with Keytruda alone, and the risk of distant spread by 38%. Yet Moderna’s shares fell nearly 25%: they had more than quadrupled since August, and the result sat at the low end of the 40–50% analysts expected. The science delivered; the share price had simply run ahead of it.
