GE: America’s AI Boom Meets the Physical World

America’s AI Boom Meets the Physical World
The plan to spend more than $10tn on US AI infrastructure by 2032 is colliding with power grids, permits and financing. At least 47 large data-centre projects have been delayed, withdrawn or blocked this year, and more than 1,000 communities have sought moratoria or limits. Markets noticed: CoreWeave’s shares fell almost 25% in a week as one of its bonds slid into distressed territory, and the Nasdaq lost 4.5%, its worst week since June. Ambition was never the constraint; electricity, land and capital are.
Inflation and Oil Turn Up the Heat
US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September, up from 3.4%, and producer prices also ran hot. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped to 5.33% on Wednesday before easing, and markets now price an 89% chance of a Fed hike in December. Oil added to the pressure: Brent rose 3.5% on Friday to about $110 after Iran said two tankers caught fire after hitting mines near Hormuz. With energy feeding inflation again, the Fed’s room to look through the war is shrinking.
China Grows on Exports, Not at Home
China’s economy grew 4.5% year on year in the third quarter, beating forecasts and picking up from 4.3%, the slowest pace in years. Exports, supercharged by global demand for AI hardware, did the heavy lifting, keeping growth within Beijing’s 4.5–5% target. Domestic demand tells a different story: retail sales rose just 1.1% in September, fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% in the first nine months and property investment dropped more than 20%. China is leaning ever harder on foreign buyers.
France’s Unrest Turns Violent
Emmanuel Macron said the French public felt “anger” and “shame” after protesters and police clashed at demonstrations across the country. He said nothing could justify the violence and that looters would be punished. Police detained almost 2,400 people, and buildings in several cities were set alight, including the town hall in Limoges. The unrest follows weeks of student-led rallies, and comes as parliament debates a tough budget. For investors already demanding a premium on French debt, street politics is now part of the fiscal story.
Settler Violence Reaches Europe’s Diplomats
Israeli settlers attacked a convoy carrying Belgian, French and Polish diplomats in the West Bank, a day after settlers assaulted a Washington Post journalist. The Israel Defence Forces condemned “the severe act of violence” and police opened an investigation. But Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s office warned against “premature conclusions”, calling the reports part of a “co-ordinated campaign to smear Israel”. The attack raises Israel’s diplomatic cost in Europe.
