Japan's growth slows sharply as energy costs and weak demand bite.

The economy expanded 1.1% on an annualised basis in the second quarter, well below analysts' expectations of 2% and down from 1.8% in the first quarter. High energy prices stemming from the Iran war, soft consumer spending and low investment all weighed on the figures, though the slowdown was partially offset by strong export growth.

Industrial output, consumption and investment all fared worse than forecast in July, with the contraction in investment deepening sharply, according to Bloomberg Economics. Real estate investment plunged 19.2% year-on-year in the first seven months to a fresh record low, passenger vehicle purchases dropped 21% and the new orders gauge in the official manufacturing PMI fell to its lowest in more than three years. BNP sees new support possible as soon as end-September should growth risk slipping below the 4.5% floor of the official target.

The foreign reserve component under China's balance of payments recorded an inflow of USD74.7bn in the second quarter, the largest since the first quarter of 2014, as the People's Bank of China absorbed heavy foreign currency inflows. The build-up coincided with a sixth consecutive quarterly gain for the onshore yuan, now at its strongest since 2023. Khoon Goh of ANZ said authorities are absorbing the inflows to slow appreciation, while Becky Liu of Standard Chartered cautioned this is not a shift in central bank policy.

Athens plans to repay roughly EUR13bn ahead of schedule this year, including about EUR2.5bn of European Financial Stability Mechanism loans and a EUR2.2bn bond maturing in 2027, funded by sizeable budget surpluses and high excess liquidity. The Public Debt Management Agency now sees debt-to-GDP falling to 137% from a prior forecast of 138.2%, which would leave Italy as Europe's most indebted country within months rather than in 2027 as the European Commission projects, with cash reserves expected to exceed EUR30bn by year-end.

The Federal Reserve releases minutes of its July meeting on Wednesday, at which policymakers voted 9-3 to hold, offering a read on how far officials were losing patience with inflation. Retailer earnings follow, with Home Depot on Tuesday, Target and Lowe's on Wednesday and Walmart on Thursday. The VIX closed below 15 on a weekly basis in August for the first time this year, which Bank of America's Paul Ciana called an opportunity to add protection into the seasonally volatile August-October window.
