MMT: Fed’s Williams expects inflation to ease, says Fed will act if it doesn’t

MENA Morning Talks

MACRO

  1. Fed's Williams expects inflation to ease, says Fed will act if it doesn't. Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams said he remained optimistic that inflation pressures are on track to ease gradually, but if they don’t the U.S. central bank will not hesitate to respond with rate hikes to ensure price pressures return to target. If energy prices and trade tariffs have peaked and the economy remains on a solid footing, “I think that some of the big drivers that pushed up inflation” over the last year and half or so “will not be at play as much, and then some of the disinflationary forces that we've been seeing” should reassert themselves, Williams said in an interview with Reuters on Friday. 2. Saudi non-oil economy powers next phase of real estate growth. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia remains one of the world's most active real estate development markets, supported by robust non-oil economic growth, ongoing regulatory reform and a substantial pipeline of infrastructure and real estate projects, according to CBRE, global leader in commercial real estate. While global economic uncertainty and regional geopolitical tensions continue to weigh on certain sectors, the kingdom’s long-term development agenda remains firmly on track. Non-oil economic activities expanded by 2.9% year-on-year in Q1 2026, helping drive overall GDP growth of 3%, while government capital expenditure continues to support the delivery of large-scale projects across the country. 3. The UAE Fuel Price Committee has set August fuel rates. The UAE Fuel Price Committee has set August fuel rates, hiking prices across the board. The changes follow price cuts of up to 16.9% in July, but come at a more modest rate than those seen after the outbreak of the war, when diesel spiked by 72.4% in April. The modest reductions align with expectations that lower crude prices would filter through to UAE pump prices, though regional tensions and shipping disruptions have kept refined fuel costs elevated. 4. Qatar’s transport infrastructure market to reach USD 13.12 bn in 2026 . Qatar’s transportation infrastructure construction industry is entering a new phase of long-term, strategy-led growth, with the sector projected to expand to USD 13.12 bn (QAR 47.82 bn) this year from USD 12.48 bn (QAR 45.48 bn) in 2025, according to a recent market analysis by Mordor Intelligence. The report notes that it is expected to amount to USD 16.85 bn (QAR 61.41 bn) by 2031, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.14% between 2026 and 2031, as a major catalyst for this transition is the Ministry of Transport’s 2025-2030 Strategy, which outlines 125 projects across 42 initiatives, backed by investments exceeding USD 330 mn (QAR 1.2 bn). M&As

  1. L’imad is wrapping up Taqa takeover. Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund L’imad is moving to acquire the remaining 1.88% of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) via its subsidiary Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower), as per an ADX disclosure. 2. Beltone Venture Capital has partially exited its investment in Egyptian proptech and hospitality platform BirdNest. Beltone Venture Capital has partially exited its investment in Egyptian proptech and hospitality platform BirdNest, generating a 3.5x return on invested capital and an 80% internal rate of return (IRR) over a two-year holding period. The transaction covered both Beltone VC’s direct investment and its stake through its joint fund with UAE-based Citadel International Holdings. Financial terms were not disclosed. An 80% IRR over two years stands out at a time when the 2024 devaluation has eroded returns across much of Egypt’s VC ecosystem. It also marks another successful realization for Beltone Venture Capital while allowing it to stay invested in a company it believes still has meaningful upside. (Enterprise)

  3. HSBC to sell Egyptian retail portfolio to Emirates NBD. HSBC is exiting retail banking in Egypt after 44 years in the market but has no intention of pulling back from corporate and institutional banking, which account for the lion’s share of its business here. The lender said yesterday that it has reached a definitive agreement with Emirates NBD Egypt that will see it hand over its entire retail business for an undisclosed sum. It’s the second significant regional move this summer for Emirates NBD after its USD 2.8 bn acquisition in June of a 60% stake in India’s RBL Bank. (Enterprise / Bloomberg Asharq)

  4. Local CNC machine manufacturer Simplex is raising a new funding round to bankroll its expansion in Tenth of Ramadan City. Local CNC machine manufacturer Simplex is raising a new funding round to bankroll its expansion in Tenth of Ramadan City, which will push its annual production capacity to 3.5k machines. الاقتصاد الكلي
