Saudi Arabia Looks to Tap Wealthy Families in New Quest for Cash.

Saudi Arabia is widening its search for capital, turning to some of the kingdom’s wealthiest families as the government looks to ease pressure on public finances and fund the next phase of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s economic overhaul. As part of those efforts, the Public Investment Fund gathered about a dozen prominent families on the Red Sea last month to assess their appetite for participating in future opportunities, according to people familiar with the matter. At the summit — which also included others from the private sector — the USD1 trillion wealth fund called for more collaboration on deals, the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. Government entities including the Ministry of Investment have also stepped up outreach to family offices, wealth managers and domestic businesses, according to some of the people. Saudi Arabia suspends work on massive Mukaab megaproject.

Saudi Arabia has suspended the planned construction of the colossal cube-shaped skyscraper, set to be the centerpiece of a major downtown development in Riyadh. According to four individuals familiar with the matter, the decision to halt the project comes as authorities reassess both its financing and overall feasibility. Three of these sources indicated that all work on the project beyond initial soil excavation and pilings has been put on hold. Despite the suspension of the skyscraper itself, development of the surrounding real estate in the area is expected to proceed. Real estate consultancy Knight Frank has estimated that the New Murabba district, where the Mukaab was to be constructed, would entail costs of approximately USD 50 bn. To date, projects commissioned in the district are valued at around USD 100 mn. Initial plans for the New Murabba district aimed for completion by 2030. However, following the reassessment, the anticipated completion date has now been pushed back to 2040.
