The ECB cut interest rates by 25bps for the second time to 3.50%
The discussion centered on Schnabel's recent comments, one of the most influential voices on the ECB’s board, highlighting the evident upside risks to inflation, a sentiment echoed in the ECB's revised inflation forecasts. However, the anticipated pace of the easing cycle in Europe appears to be aligning with market expectations for the U.S. The Federal Reserve's blackout period has curtailed further discussions on whether the easing will start with a 25 basis points or a 50 basis points cut, until insights from Bill Dudley and the Wall Street Journal emerged. Notably, the latest U.S. headline CPI registered a modest increase of 0.19% month-on-month and a year-on-year rise of 2.5%, marking the lowest annual inflation rate since February 2021.
Following the first U.S. Presidential debate, the Mexican peso showed stronger performance despite ongoing concerns over judicial reforms. Meanwhile, OPEC+’s decision to postpone supply increases by two months had minimal impact, as the focus shifted to the rising volatility in crude oil prices. Additionally, hopes for a ceasefire in the Middle East did not materialize. On a positive note, the EU's decision to reduce proposed tariffs on Tesla and Chinese EVs initially boosted market sentiment, with Tesla's tariff decreasing from 9% to 7.8%.
In other news, Turkey received a rating upgrade to BB- from Fitch, a significant improvement from its previous Single B status, marking the first Double B upgrade by any agency since 2018. However, the market response to this upgrade was muted, and Jordan’s upgrade to Double B by S&P also went largely unnoticed.
What’s next for markets: Fed, BoJ, BoE, and Emerging Market insights
The most important market event next week is the Federal Reserve decision. This will be closely followed by the Bank of Japan and Bank of England rate decisions. Chinese data across industrial production, investment and retail sales are likely to show signs of slowing next week. However, the PBoC are unlikely to move the one-year Medium Lending Facility or one-year and five-year Loan Prime Rates.
Other than G10 interest rate decisions, the most important EM central bank decision is Brazil. The BCB are at risk of hiking interest rates, ending the recent easing cycle to temper inflation. The sell-side has recently begun to forecast three 25bps consecutive interest rate hikes this year. However, Central Banks in Indonesia and Turkey are likely to remain unchanged, but South Africa may cut 25bps.
Oil prices take a dive: What’s next?
Crude oil has been on a steep decline lately, leaving bullish sentiment scarce at Asia’s top oil conference in Singapore this week. Brent prices have plummeted by about 13% in just over two weeks, creating a gloomy atmosphere at the Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference. Analysts from firms like Goldman Sachs and Trafigura are mostly pessimistic, predicting further price drops. A major topic of discussion was China, the world’s largest oil importer, which is facing a tough economic downturn and shifting towards greener transport options. Even the petrochemical sector, which usually boosts crude demand, could be at risk if trade tensions rise and exports decline.
But the biggest concern for many at the conference was the oversupply of oil. OPEC+ has postponed its output increases, but plans to add over 2 million barrels per day next year remain. Meanwhile, production from outside the alliance is also set to rise, with the U.S. shale sector, Brazil, Canada, and Guyana expected to contribute more. The big question on everyone’s mind: where will all this oil go? With China struggling to drive demand as it once did, its role is changing. The International Energy Agency predicts global oil consumption will only grow by 1% next year, which is well below the expected supply increases.
TikTok’s legal battle: A fight for survival
TikTok, the world’s favorite video app, is heading to court on Monday to defend its future in the U.S. After a law was passed in April requiring the app to be sold to a non-Chinese owner within a year, TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is standing firm against selling. With 170 million American users, TikTok is aiming to overturn this law.
The app will argue that the ban violates its free speech rights, while the U.S. government claims it poses a national security risk, fearing that the app could be used for propaganda. If TikTok loses its appeal, it might negotiate with the next president. Current Vice President Kamala Harris supports the government’s stance, but Donald Trump, who once wanted to ban TikTok, now says he wants it to stay.
