Can Apple catch up with its rivals in the AI race?
In June 2023, Apple chief executive Tim Cook walked onstage at the company’s flagship annual developers conference to announce, in the tradition set by Steve Jobs, “one more thing.” Just six months earlier, OpenAI’s ChatGPT had launched, gaining a million users in just five days and triggering a new cycle in the tech industry. Generative AI, the technology promising a profound new level of machine intelligence, was not new. But the chatbot was the first product based on large language models to truly grab the popular imagination.
The proponents of generative AI say it portends a radical future where our devices can contextually understand vast amounts of information and offer dynamic, smarter, humanlike responses to our needs. But the “thing” Cook went on to announce that June day was the Vision Pro, Apple’s mixed-reality headset which remains a niche product limited to the US market. As the dust settled, commentators were quick to pick up on something: not once, during a series of presentations from Apple’s top executives, had any of them even mentioned the term “generative AI”.
A year on, there are fears that Apple may have missed the boat on a generational shift. The likes of Google, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon have raced to capitalise on the technology, investing billions of dollars into the hardware required to power generative models. The company has meanwhile had a run of bad headlines, as the EU and the Biden administration pursue it over alleged antitrust violations. Its shares have recovered from a slump at the start of the year, but after a major growth spurt as pandemic lockdowns were lifted, sales of the iPhone, Apple’s most lucrative product, are flattening. And in what risks being seen as a sign of the times, the company is vying with Nvidia, the darling of the generative AI boom, for the rank of the second most valuable US company.
ECB cut interest rates, but the Fed Is still in charge
The European Central Bank has joined the Bank of Canada in initiating an interest rate-cutting cycle this week, and more central banks, such as those in the US and UK, are expected to follow suit in the coming months. While the domestic economic circumstances have prompted these policy moves, concerns about how currency markets would react if the Federal Reserve delays its own monetary easing could potentially curtail further rate cuts by the ECB and other central banks.
This is worsened by the Fed's overly reactive policy approach and its inflation target of 2%, which is considered too low given the fragmenting support for globalization and the reversal of the Washington consensus on liberalization, deregulation, and fiscal discipline. Despite starting its hiking cycle after the Fed and not raising rates as much, the ECB has still managed to cut rates before both the Bank of England and the Fed. Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem has indicated that further rate cuts are reasonable based on the current economic outlook.
It is anticipated that the Fed will begin its own rate-cutting cycle in July, while the Bank of England is expected to act after the UK election. The Bank of Japan, however, is likely to remain the outlier in the G7 group, as it is still in the early stages of normalizing from an extended period of extremely low interest rates. A key challenge for the Fed will be recognizing that the appropriate inflation target over the next few years, consistent with its mandate of maximum employment, should be closer to 3% rather than the current 2% target. There are various ways to execute this shift while still maintaining anchored long-term inflationary expectations, but it will require policymakers to internalize the effects of the ongoing structural changes in national economies and global economic and financial interdependencies.
Far right makes significant gains in European parliament elections
Far-right parties have made significant gains in the EU elections, performing well in Germany and comfortably winning the vote in France, prompting Emmanuel Macron to call a snap parliamentary election. Early results suggested that far-right and hard-right parties were on course to hold almost a quarter of the seats when the European parliament next sits, up from a fifth in 2019.
The French president shocked his allies on Sunday by calling an immediate election for the National Assembly after exit polls gave France’s Rassemblement National more than double the vote share of Macron’s centrist alliance. “I’ve decided to give you back the choice,” Macron said in an address to the electorate from the Élysée Palace.
The results delivered a stinging blow to the domestic standing of Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and are expected to help tilt the European parliament towards a more anti-immigration and anti-green stance. But parties of the centre retained a majority in the new parliament. Early results showed the centre-right European People’s party was on track to win 185 seats, leaving the Socialists and Democrats in second place with 137 seats, with the liberal Renew group on 80, holding on to third place. The Greens are set to fall from 71 seats in 2019 to 52, the estimates show.
In France, the RN party led by Marine Le Pen won 31.5% of the country’s vote, according to early results. “This result is emphatic. Our countrymen have expressed a desire for change and a path for the future,” said Jordan Bardella, who led the RN’s campaign list. In Germany, the three parties in Scholz’s coalition were all overtaken by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which came in second behind the conservative CDU-CSU opposition. Ultraconservative and nationalist parties also won or made significant gains in Austria, Cyprus, Greece and the Netherlands, exit polls showed.
Benny Gantz resigns from Israel’s government over Gaza
Centrist politician Benny Gantz has resigned from Israel’s emergency government and called for early elections, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of mishandling Israel’s war in Gaza. In a speech on Sunday evening, Gantz, a former general who joined Netanyahu’s coalition in the aftermath of Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, said he had decided to leave the government because the premier was preventing Israel “from moving forward to a true victory”.
“Fateful strategic decisions are met with hesitancy and procrastination due to political considerations,” Gantz said. “In the autumn, a year after the disaster, we need to hold elections that will establish a government that will win the trust of the people . . . I call on Netanyahu: set a date.” In a wide-ranging speech, Gantz also backed a US-led push to free the roughly 120 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza via a deal with Hamas, and supported a commission of inquiry into the failures surrounding October 7.
Gantz’s departure follows months of tensions within Netanyahu’s coalition with far-right and ultrareligious groups over the course of the war, with Israel still far from its goals of destroying Hamas and securing the release of the hostages still held by the militant group. Gantz said last month that he would leave the government if Netanyahu did not agree to a new plan for the war and its aftermath by June 8. Netanyahu instantly rejected his demands, accusing Gantz of issuing “an ultimatum to the prime minister instead of issuing an ultimatum to Hamas”.
But after Gantz’s departure — which he had postponed by a day following the rescue of four Israeli hostages in Gaza on Saturday — Netanyahu called on him to change his mind. “Israel is in an existential war on multiple fronts,” he wrote on X. “Benny, this is not the time to abandon the campaign — this is the time to join forces.”
However, opposition politicians welcomed Gantz’s resignation, which was accompanied by that of his ally Gadi Eisenkot, who also joined the emergency government and war cabinet in the wake of Hamas’s attack.
