The Indian giant has arrived

The Indian giant has arrived
With India's development continuing to gain steam, one of the biggest challenges will be to avoid the mistake that others have made when they failed to recognize their newly acquired global systemic influence and adapt accordingly. Given its success and outlook, India can no longer claim to be an economically small developing country with few global spillovers. Its growing systemic importance will bring a larger set of risks and opportunities. India today is near where China and Big Tech were before they inadvertently triggered reactions that have complicated their growth strategies and undermined their reputations. India must lose no time in managing its growing footprint, so that its domestic priorities align with international realities.
When China was at a similar stage of economic development 16 years ago, it ran a current account surplus of 10% of GDP. With Chinese policymakers focused on the stock-market bubble in 2007, they ignored growing external concerns about mercantilism and “unfair” competition until it was too late. Now, the US and others have introduced tight trade, capital, and technology restrictions against China, most of which seem likely to remain in place indefinitely. The lesson is that a purely reactive approach, with its inevitable delayed response, is much less effective than a balanced approach combining proactive and reactive elements. The current Indian government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appears to understand this, and has been generally praised for how it has navigated today’s highly complex and tense global environment.
But there is more work to be done. India should seek to play a larger role in the world’s multilateral institutions, where it could be a strong voice for constructive reform. For understandable reasons, India has stayed away from China’s Belt and Road Initiative. But like it or not, China and India are both destined to be giants in the global economy. The nature of their relations will have an enormous effect on the future of global integration and cooperation. Working gradually toward a more constructive relationship that is consistent with its other geopolitical priorities (including vis-à-vis the US), should be an objective for India. It is also a key element in both countries’ ability to manage their expanding global footprints.
Turkey’s Central Bank hikes 500bps in significant boost to investor confidence
The Central Bank of Turkey (CBT) hiked its main policy rate by 500bps to 50%, defying consensus market expectations that saw policymakers as too politically constrained to take decisive action only days ahead of important local elections on March 31st. In addition, the CBT also widened its interest rate corridor around the main policy rate to +/-300bps from +/- 150bps. This gives the authorities additional flexibility to deliver further tightening of onshore financial conditions without an explicit hike by shifting all funding to the upper bound of the policy rate corridor.
CBT’s policy action this week comes as a major upside surprise to consensus market expectations and domestic economic sentiment and could set in motion a powerful “virtuous cycle” for macroeconomic rebalancing and local currency assets in the second half of the year, in our view. The authorities pointed to the deterioration in the inflation outlook due to resilient domestic demand and unequivocally confirmed a strong commitment to bringing inflation under control. In that context, we expect a disinflationary path to gain traction in 2H supported by favorable base effects as well as better coordination between monetary and fiscal policy in the aftermath of the upcoming local elections. This week’s preemptive policy action might even enable the CBT to consider rate cuts in 4Q if the inflation outlook improves and medium-term inflation expectations get credibly re-anchored. This should make rebuilding FX reserves and ensuring relative TRY stability more achievable, supporting the investment case for Turkish local currency assets.
US inflation gauge seen bolstering Fed patience on rates
The Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying US inflation probably remained uncomfortably high in February, showing why central bankers are wary about cutting interest rates too soon. The core personal consumption expenditures price index, which excludes food and energy costs, is seen rising 0.3% on the heels of its biggest monthly increase in a year. The overall measure is forecast to climb 0.4%, the most since September.
That would leave annualized core price growth over the past three months running at the fastest pace since May. On a six-month annualized basis, the core PCE price index would also show an acceleration. What’s more, some economists expect the January figures to be revised higher following recent government reports on consumer and producer prices. That stands in contrast to the end of 2023, when inflationary pressures were showing signs of settling back to the Fed’s 2% goal. Fed Chair Jerome Powell, after he and his colleagues kept interest rates unchanged for a fifth meeting, emphasized the broader story of a gradual yet bumpy path for getting inflation back to target. Price data so far this year has neither added to policymakers’ confidence nor undercut it, he indicated.
At a moment of military might, Israel looks deeply vulnerable
There is still a narrow path out of the hellscape of Gaza. A temporary ceasefire and hostage release could cause a change of Israel’s government; the rump of Hamas fighters in south Gaza could be contained or fade away; and from the rubble, talks on a two-state solution could begin, underwritten by America and its Gulf allies. It is just as likely, however, that ceasefire talks will fail. That could leave Israel locked in the bleakest trajectory of its 75-year existence, featuring endless occupation, hard-right politics and isolation. Today many Israelis are in denial about this, but a political reckoning will come eventually. It will determine not only the fate of Palestinians, but also whether Israel thrives in the next 75 years. Today Israel has destroyed perhaps half of Hamas’s forces. But in important ways its mission has failed.
First, in Gaza, where its reluctance to help provide or distribute aid has led to an avoidable humanitarian catastrophe, and where the civilian toll from the war is over 30,000 and growing. The hard-right government of Binyamin Netanyahu has rejected plans for post-war Gaza to be run by either the Palestinian Authority (pa) or an international force. The likeliest outcome is a military reoccupation. If you add the West Bank, Israel could permanently hold sway over 4m-5m Palestinians. Israel has also failed at home. The problems go deeper than Mr Netanyahu’s dire leadership. A growing settler movement and ultra-Orthodox population have tilted politics to the right and polarised society. Before October 7th this was visible in a struggle over judicial independence.
Israel’s final failure is clumsy diplomacy. Fury at the war was inevitable, especially in the global south, but Israel has done a poor job of countering it. “Lawfare”, including spurious genocide allegations, is damaging its reputation. Young Americans sympathise with it less than their parents do. President Joe Biden has tried to restrain Mr Netanyahu’s government by publicly embracing it, but failed. On March 14th Chuck Schumer, Israel’s greatest ally in the Senate, decried Hamas’s atrocities but said Israel’s leader was “lost”. It is a bleak picture that is not always acknowledged in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv. Mr Netanyahu talks of invading Rafah, Hamas’s last redoubt, while the hard right fantasises about resettling Gaza. Many mainstream Israelis are deluding themselves, too. They believe the unique threats to Israel justify its ruthlessness and that the war has helped restore deterrence.
