The Federal Reserve removed its tightening bias

This theme began with the Bank of Canada and the ECB the week before, but the Federal Reserve and Bank of England followed with dovish statements. The nature of the press releases saw that one MPC voter at the Bank of England called for a cut at the February meeting. However, Chair Powell ducked and dived through the Q&A session and ultimately ruled out an interest rate cut in March. He even seemed to suggest that the December Summary of Economic Projections appeared outdated, which would imply more than the three cuts that Fed officials forecast. Meanwhile, the IMF’s World Economic Outlook painted a more resilient picture with moderating inflation and steady global growth as the probability of a hard landing scenario recedes. Global GDP was revised higher to 3.1%, with US and EM growth expectations of 2.1% and 4.1% in 2024, respectively. Yet, the alarm bells in financial markets rang with Bancorp falling 45% this week after earnings and broader concerns around US commercial real estate. The sector of US regional banks endured a volatile week. Across EM, comfort rose in Bolivia’s precarious fiscal position; Ecuador paid 273 million USD in interest on its restructured global bond on Wednesday; and Brazil, Chile and Colombia cut interest rates. Ukraine is set to receive 50 billion EUR from the EU and Hungary did not veto the plan and Egypt is anticipating an even larger IMF deal with expectations now up to 10 billion USD. In Asia, Indian government bond yields gapped lower on the fiscal update; a Filipino corporate opted not to issue bonds given weak investor appetite; and China’s manufacturing activity shrank for the fourth consecutive month. In fact, the continued weakness in China saw 10-year yields fall to the lowest since 2002.

Turkish monthly prices probably rose most since August

Turkish monthly prices probably rose most since August
Turkish monthly inflation in January probably jumped the most since the summer, an acceleration that could test the new central bank chief’s resolve after his predecessor announced the end of a tightening cycle. On the back of a sharp increase in the minimum wage and government tax adjustments, data due today will probably show price gains in January from a month earlier quickened to 6.5% after five consecutive monthly declines, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg poll of economists. A separate survey showed annual price growth dropped slightly, to 64.6% from 64.8% the previous month. Turkey’s Central Bank Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan resigned abruptly late Friday, just eight months after being appointed as part of a new economic team charged with leading a dramatic pivot in economic policy. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan quickly appointed Deputy Governor Fatih Karahan to replace her, signaling a continuation of the transition to more investor-friendly, orthodox economic policies. The central bank recently increased interest rates to 45% after an extensive tightening cycle under Erkan, a reversal of the unorthodox policy of keeping borrowing costs low previously favored by Erdogan. January’s data will be key to determining whether inflation stays on the central bank’s projected path. If monthly prices significantly surpass analysts’ expectations, it may prompt an upward revision of forecasts and potentially a review of rate policy. Karahan is expected to lay out new year-end inflation estimates on Feb. 8.
Saudi Arabia ditches plan to raise oil production

Saudi Arabia ditches plan to raise oil production

Saudi Arabia has dropped a plan to expand the kingdom’s daily oil production capacity, in a major policy reversal by the world’s largest oil exporter. State-run Saudi Aramco on Tuesday said it had been asked by the energy ministry to abandon a plan to increase its maximum sustainable production capacity from 12 million barrels a day to 13mn b/d by 2027. The multibillion-dollar investment program had set the company apart from much of the industry, where spending on oil production is generally falling because of concerns about climate targets and future demand. Saudi Aramco accounts for about 10% of the 100 million barrels of oil the world consumes every day. The decision was taken by the ministry of energy and was not driven by any technical or operational issue at the company, which remains in a position to restart the investment program if requested. The ministry of energy has not issued a statement or provided any explanation for the move, which is a significant policy shift for the kingdom. Saudi Aramco chief executive Amin Nasser has spent the past two years advocating for more investment in oil production across the industry. But in the past 18 months, Saudi Arabia has repeatedly cut production as part of Opec’s efforts to support prices amid slowing demand growth and increased output from the US and other producers. As a result, Saudi Aramco is currently producing about 9mn b/d, down from an average of 10.2mn b/d in the first three months of 2022.

China calls for 1.4 Trillion USD stock stabilization fund

China calls for 1.4 Trillion USD stock stabilization fund
China should set up a stocks stabilization fund as soon as possible to boost market confidence, with an aim to get its size to 10 trillion yuan (1.4 trillion USD) or more. The size of the fund should be around 300 billion USD to 500 billion USD in the short term. It should then be increased based on the value of the country’s capital market. Chinese authorities are considering a package of measures to stabilize the slumping stock market, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg News last month. Policy makers are seeking to mobilize about 2 trillion yuan, mainly from the offshore accounts of Chinese state-owned enterprises, they added. China’s stock selloff deepened last week, with a key index falling to a five-year low. The CSI 300 Index benchmark gauge tumbled 6.3% in January, a record sixth straight month of losses. The stock market has undoubtedly shown liquidity pressure in the short term.
