LOCAL NEWS
“Good morning, people of Saudi Arabia! Welcome to Zilla Capital’s Kingdom Pulse.
- Saudi official reserve assets reach SAR 1.83 tn in August, up 6.7% year on year.
Reserve assets stood at SAR 1.83 trillion at the end of August, a 6.7% increase from a year earlier, though they slipped 0.27% month on month in a second consecutive monthly decline, according to Saudi Central Bank data. Foreign exchange reserves rose 7.2% year on year to SAR 1.73 trillion, while Special Drawing Rights fell 2% to SAR 79.4 billion. The composition is the point: the buffer sits overwhelmingly in deployable foreign currency rather than in revaluation gains, which is what gives Riyadh room to absorb both the fiscal drag from reduced oil output and the cost of sustained defensive spending. The two consecutive monthly declines are small in isolation but worth tracking as a directional signal while export disruption persists. (Saudi Central Bank)
- Crude extends gains as the Red Sea route comes under fire.
Brent rose 1.7% to USD 98.60 a barrel on Tuesday, with the move driven by a specific supply concern rather than broad risk aversion. Prices were already elevated on the US-Israeli war against Iran and Tehran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and the strikes on southern Saudi energy infrastructure add pressure at the point the market had treated as the workaround. The concentration of export flow through Bab al-Mandeb since Hormuz closed means outages in the south now carry more weight per barrel than equivalent disruption elsewhere in the kingdom would have carried a year ago. (Financial Times)
- Non-oil and government activities each grow 0.9% in the second quarter.
Non-oil activities and government activities each expanded 0.9% year on year in Q2 2026, with several individual economic activities recording stronger growth, according to General Authority for Statistics estimates. The figure sits well below the 4%-plus non-oil growth the kingdom was posting before the conflict, and reflects the drag the war has placed on tourism and business investment. It also underscores how much of the headline GDP picture now turns on the oil side, where output has been running sharply below year-earlier levels since the Hormuz closure. (GASTAT via Saudi Gazette)
- TASI holds near 11,070 as investors read the strikes as an energy earnings story.
The benchmark index stood at 11,068.65, up 0.32% or 35.74 points, with market capitalisation at SAR 3.21 trillion and value traded at SAR 2.96 billion across roughly 284,500 transactions. The index is up 5.51% year to date. The resilience through a day of confirmed strikes on domestic energy infrastructure reflects a divergence worth tracking: commodity markets are pricing supply risk while equity markets are pricing the revenue side of higher crude. That gap narrows quickly if outages move from temporary to structural. (Argaam, Saudi Exchange)
- Saudi Vitrified Clay Pipes files capital reduction with the CMA as National Gypsum delays results again.
The company announced it has submitted its capital decrease application file to the Capital Market Authority, updating an earlier disclosure. Separately, National Gypsum issued an update on its previously announced inability to publish interim financial results for the six months ended 30 June 2026, and Edaa said it was implementing a corporate action on Arabian Plastic Industrial Co securities. Repeated reporting delays at smaller industrials are worth watching as a signal of how the disruption is filtering into companies without the balance-sheet depth of the large caps. (Tadawul disclosures via Mubasher)
- Gold in the kingdom rises to SAR 529.25 a gram.
Gold prices increased on Wednesday to SAR 529.25 per gram from SAR 525.86 a day earlier, with the tola price rising to SAR 6,173.29 from SAR 6,133.51, according to data compiled by FXStreet from international prices adapted to local currency and measures. The move tracks the broader flight into hard assets as regional escalation continues, and mirrors the valuation effect now driving reserve growth elsewhere in the region — Egypt's August reserve gain came almost entirely from gold rather than new hard currency. (FXStreet)
- Britain moves to sign its GCC trade agreement within weeks as the Gulf climbs London's agenda.
New UK Trade Minister Anas Sarwar told The National that Britain is ready to sign the Gulf agreement, finalised in May after nearly four years of negotiation and now awaiting signature and domestic approval, while talks with Abu Dhabi on a follow-on bilateral track are already underway. London estimates the deal could lift trade with the bloc by 19.8% over the long run and remove USD 784 mn in annual tariffs on British exports at current volumes, USD 486 mn of that from day one. Sarwar chose Saudi Arabia and the UAE for his first trip outside Europe, with discussions spanning energy, AI data centres, ports, aviation and defence, and capital sought in both directions. The timing is the substance: the Iran war has pushed energy and supply-chain security up Britain's agenda, turning a long-stalled trade file into a strategic one. UK-UAE trade reached GBP 25 bn in 2025, close to half the GBP 53 bn traded with the GCC as a whole, and the UAE-UK Sovereign Investment Partnership has committed more than GBP 30 bn into Britain since 2021. (The National, Enterprise)
- FlyNow Arabia plans a Saudi eVTOL mass-production facility after moving its headquarters to Riyadh.
CEO Yvonne Winter told Asharq Business the company is developing the plant with support from the General Authority of Civil Aviation, having recently signed memoranda covering roughly 700 aircraft across various uses. The rollout runs in sequence: a pilot phase of about two years, then cargo and firefighting services, then air taxi operations by 2030, timed to Expo. The company announced its expansion plan in 2025, including an eCopters production facility and the kingdom's first flying taxi, and ran sandbox flights last year with local and international partners to demonstrate safe eVTOL integration in low-altitude airspace. The manufacturing commitment is the substantive part — service launches are announcements, a production line is localised industrial capacity. (Asharq Business)
ON THE GLOBAL FRONT
Pakistan pledges to honor the Mecca pact if Saudi Arabia is attacked.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said Islamabad is bound by the terms of the trilateral agreement and will honor it in the event of aggression, telling Geo News there should be no ambiguity on the point, and warning that Houthi actions could make the agreement operational. He described the pact, signed in Mecca last month with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, as defensive rather than offensive, providing for a collective response to an attack on any signatory, and urged the Houthis not to draw the kingdom further into Yemen's conflict. Asif said he did not know whether Riyadh had approached Islamabad, but that Pakistan is bound to react under the agreement. His comments landed as Saudi Arabia halted several southern energy facilities following fresh Houthi strikes, and as Iran signaled a more aggressive posture toward the US after reorganizing its military ranks around what it called an offensive doctrine. On the separate track, Asif said he remained hopeful about US-Iran peace efforts despite the impasse, calling the diplomacy a tight-rope walk and the situation slightly better than a stalemate.
Houthi strikes hit energy sites in four southern Saudi cities, wounding 73. The Energy Ministry said the missile and drone attacks forced a temporary halt to some operations, with specialised teams working to contain fires at several locations and assess the damage.
Coalition spokesman Maj Gen Turki Al Malki put the casualty figure at 73 civilians wounded across Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, called the assault a dangerous escalation, and said the coalition would act against the sources of the threat and neutralise them. The Houthi military described a large-scale operation against Aramco facilities and an air base. Brent rose 1.7% to USD 98.60. Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said last month that earlier attacks had interrupted some production without material operational or financial impact — a line that becomes harder to hold if Jazan outages extend.
